Finding Great Insurance Benefits

3 Tips for Getting Great Motorcycle Insurance

Buying a motorcycle is exciting, but it also means extra expenses, including the bike itself, your motorcycle gear, gas, and of course motorcycle insurance. Luckily, it is possible to get solid insurance coverage without spending a ton of money. Here are three tips to try out before you sign up for a new motorcycle insurance policy.

1. Ask About Seasonal Coverage

If you have a car as well as a motorcycle, you may not actually ride your motorcycle year-round. Many motorcycle riders only ride in the spring, summer, and fall, and leave their motorcycle stored inside during the winter months when it's cold outside and roads are icy.

If that describes your own riding habits, you may want to look into seasonal coverage, sometimes called layup insurance. This type of policy provides full coverage during the months when your motorcycle is in use and only limited coverage for theft or natural disasters during the time when you're not riding. It is typically easier and less expensive than canceling your policy each winter.

2. Bundle Your Policy

For many people, getting motorcycle insurance is in addition to the other policies they already have, like car insurance, homeowner's insurance, or business liability insurance. If you choose to have all of your insurance policies with the same company, you may be given a bundled policy discount.

In many cases, this doesn't happen automatically, so it is worth calling your insurance agent and asking how you can bundle your policies together and what discounts are available if you do. You may be pleasantly surprised by earning a discount on your other policies as well.

3. Take a Motorcycle Safety Class

Taking a motorcycle safety class is a great way to get a discount on your motorcycle insurance policy while learning to be a safer rider at the same time. Many insurance companies are glad to offer a discount in exchange for knowing that you have learned the skills needed to keep you safe on the road. Just be sure to double check with your insurance company first. Most insurance companies have specific classes they prefer for you to take, and they may not offer discounts if you take a class with a school that isn't on their approved list.

Spending a bit of extra time doing the legwork to get discounts on your motorcycle insurance can really pay off. You'll pay less on your premiums while still getting great coverage. Talk with a motorcycle insurance agency, like Northeast Insurance Agency, to find out which discounts you're eligible to receive.
